Our space included a picnic table and fire pit, but the best fun was had running across the open land with new friends. In the far barn is the opportunity to make a corncob doll or a rope, and twist hay into kindling. Be sure to catch a covered wagon – you might even get a chance to drive! – to the Johnson Schoolhouse where you may hear tales of going to school in a one room schoolhouse.
Some, including Lane's biographer William Holtz, have alleged that Wilder's daughter was her ghostwriter. In 1928, Lane hired out the construction of an English-style stone cottage for her parents on property adjacent to the farmhouse they had personally built and still inhabited. The Wilders had learned from cultivating wheat as their sole crop in De Smet.

After touring these buildings you will drive to the site of the Ingalls home in town. This house was built by Pa after Laura was married, but a visit is well worth your time. Five of the eight books Laura wrote about her life took place in and around DeSmet, South Dakota. From the family's move in By the Shores of Silver Lake through These Happy Golden Years, Laura and her family settled, struggled, and survived in the often harsh prairie conditions of South Dakota. When my daughters were 6 & 8 I began sharing the ‘Little House' books with them. I first read the books aloud, the girls listening raptly as Ma encountered the bear in Wisconsin, as Jack was swept away by the river in Missouri , and as the family survived the South Dakota blizzards.
The lake, which is modest in size, is often inquired about by many of De Smet’s visitors. The Memorial Society preserves and presents the largest collection of Ingalls family memorabilia, with over 2000 original artifacts. Children are invited to try an old fashioned sewing machine, dress like a pioneer and learn how to read Braille at the Discovery Center.

Because the homestead was a working farm for many years even after the books became famous, many of the original buildings were moved or torn down. But the homestead has a few antique buildings from Laura's days, and several impressive replicas. Wilder's column in the Ruralist, "As a Farm Woman Thinks," introduced her to a loyal audience of rural Ozarkians, who enjoyed her regular columns. While the couple were never wealthy until the "Little House" books began to achieve popularity, the farming operation and Wilder's income from writing and the Farm Loan Association provided them with a stable living. The De Smet Cemetery is located southwest of De Smet on a beautiful hilltop with many trees overlooking the city as well as a view of the site of the Charles “Pa” Ingalls homestead and the “big slough” to the east. Each year hundreds of visitors view the grave sites of several of the Ingalls family, including Charles, Caroline, Mary, Carrie, Grace and infant son of Laura and Almanzo Wilder.

The homes of Laura and her family are easily visited. They're listed below in the order in which the family lived there. "He identifies so much with them as a family. When we got to the part in the books where Jack dies, his eyes filled with tears, and he kept asking, 'Why did Jack have to die?' It was almost like it was his own dog." Now the restored hotel is the Laura Ingalls Wilder Park and Museum, where tour guides talk about "the missing link" while leading visitors through rooms filled with period furnishings. DeJong passed on a love for the simple life and the "Little House" books to her daughter, Mary Kirkpatrick, whom I met in Burr Oak, Iowa. Heading out of town to the west takes you to DeSmet Cemetery where the Ingalls family, minus Laura, are buried.

Both Laura and Almanzo had diptheria and Almanzo suffered a leaving him partially paralyzed. In time, he regained use of his legs, but not fully. Laura and Almanzo’s second child, a son, died a month after his birth in 1889.

The current depot was built in 1906 after a fire on April 23, 1905 destroyed the original one. Today visitors can see original lights, windows and fixtures are still in the depot over one hundred years later. The brick walkway on the west of the depot ground was laid by the Chicago Northwestern Railroad Company in 1906. In-depth bus tours, offered daily in the summer, get visitors into the countryside to see Laura’s beloved prairie. Little House fans get a chance to see Silver Lake, the Big Slough, Lake Henry, the De Smet Cemetery, and Almanzo’s homestead and tree claim sites. Today native prairie grasses cover over one hundred acres, period buildings house exhibits that share homestead life, and hands-on activities allow families to understand the changes in our agricultural heritage.
Her brother, Charles Frederick Ingalls ("Freddie"), was born there on November 1, 1875, dying nine months later in August 1876.
